How to Use the Final Exam Calculator
- Enter current grade or assignment scores. Choose "Yes" and type your current grade directly, or choose "No" and enter each completed assignment's score and points possible — the calculator works out your current grade for you.
- Enter target course grade. Type a percentage, or use one of the quick letter-grade buttons.
- Enter final exam weight. The percentage of your course grade that the final exam determines.
- Calculate required final score. The result updates live, and the Calculate button re-confirms it.
How Is the Required Final Exam Score Calculated?
The calculator solves for the final exam score using:
- Required Final Score = (Target Grade − Current Grade × (1 − Final Weight)) ÷ Final Weight
- Current Grade — your grade from coursework completed before the final, as a percentage.
- Target Grade — the overall course grade you want to reach, as a percentage.
- Final Weight — the fraction of the course grade the final exam determines (entered as a percentage, converted to a decimal for the formula).
What Does Current Grade Mean?
Current grade should represent only the coursework completed before the final exam — homework, quizzes, tests, projects, participation, and anything else already graded. The final exam itself must not already be included in that percentage, or the calculation will double-count it.
What If the Required Score Is Over 100%?
A required score above 100% means the target is not mathematically reachable with the current grade, target, and final weight supplied — no exam score can push the course grade that high. The calculator still shows the exact mathematical requirement (for example, 101.67%) rather than silently capping it at 100%, alongside the highest course grade actually attainable — the Maximum Possible Course Grade, which assumes a perfect final.
How Is the Maximum Possible Grade Calculated?
The maximum possible course grade assumes a 100% score on the final exam: Maximum Course Grade = Current Grade × (1 − Final Weight) + 100 × Final Weight. The minimum possible course grade uses the same formula with a 0% final exam score instead.
Worked Example
Current grade: 85%. Target course grade: 90%. Final exam weight: 30%.
- Required final score: (90 − 85 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = 101.67%
- Minimum possible course grade (0% on the final): 59.50%
- Maximum possible course grade (100% on the final): 89.50%
