Q: How do I calculate hours worked from a time card?
Subtract the start time from the end time, then subtract any unpaid break. If the shift crosses midnight, the end time is treated as belonging to the next day rather than producing a negative number.
Q: How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?
Divide the minutes by 60. For example, 45 minutes is 45 ÷ 60 = 0.75 hours, so 7 hours 45 minutes becomes 7.75 hours. This calculator can display either format.
Q: How does this calculator handle overnight shifts?
If the end time is earlier than the start time and "Allow overnight shifts" is enabled, the shift is treated as ending the following day. For example, 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM is calculated as 8 hours, not a negative duration.
Q: How is overtime calculated?
You set your own daily and/or weekly overtime thresholds and multipliers, and the calculator applies them to the hours entered. Overtime rules vary by location, employment classification, industry, and agreement, so this tool does not assume or determine what is legally owed — it applies exactly the thresholds you configure.
Q: Can I set both a daily and a weekly overtime rule?
This calculator applies one rule at a time: pick "Daily threshold" to classify overtime/double-time within each day, or "Weekly threshold" to classify overtime from total hours across the week. Only the relevant threshold fields are shown for the mode you pick, so the two never overlap or double-count.
Q: Can I deduct unpaid breaks?
Yes. Each shift has its own break field, entered in minutes, which is subtracted from that shift's worked time before it is added to the day's total.
Q: Can I add more than one shift in a day?
Yes. Click "+ Add shift" under any day to add a split shift (for example, a morning shift and an afternoon shift), and the hours from all shifts that day are added together.
Q: What does time rounding do?
Rounding adjusts each day's total worked time to the nearest 5, 6, 10, or 15 minutes. This changes the calculated hours and may not reflect a specific workplace's payroll policy, so use it only if you know that policy applies to you.
Q: Is the estimated gross pay my take-home pay?
No. Estimated gross pay is simply hours worked × hourly rate (with overtime/double-time multipliers applied) — it does not subtract taxes or other withholdings. Use the Salary & Paycheck Calculator for an estimate of take-home pay.
Q: Can I save my timecard?
Not in the browser — this calculator does not store any data. Use Print / Save PDF or Download CSV to keep a copy of a completed timecard.
Q: Can I hide the pay figures and just see hours?
Yes. Uncheck "Include payment information" near the top of the form to hide the hourly rate, OT/DT multipliers, and the Estimated Pay panel — the hours breakdown and totals stay visible either way.
