Albert Einstein (14 March 1879 – 18 April 1955) was a German-born theoretical physicist, widely acknowledged to be one of the greatest physicists of all time. He is known for his Theory of General Relativity and the equation "E = mc
2", but he also made important contributions to the development of the theory of quantum mechanics. In 1921, Einstein won the Nobel Prize for physics for his explanation of the photoelectric effect. Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe. Few are those who see with their own eyes and feel with their own hearts. I believe in intuitions and inspirations. I sometimes feel that I am right. I do not know that I am. If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough. There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle. If you want your children to be intelligent, read them fairy tales. If you want them to be more intelligent, read them more fairy tales. The value of achievement lies in the achieving. Time is an illusion. I am enough of an artist to draw freely upon my imagination. Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world. Logic will get you from A to Z; imagination will get you everywhere. If you can't explain it to a six year old, you don't understand it yourself. Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving. Love brings much happiness, much more so than pining for someone brings pain. Unthinking respect for authority is the greatest enemy of truth. The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing. Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new. We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them. I speak to everyone in the same way, whether he is the garbage man or the president of the university. The most incomprehensible thing about the world is that it is comprehensible. Try not to become a man of success, but rather try to become a man of value. Never memorize something that you can look up. I am by heritage a Jew, by citizenship a Swiss, and by makeup a human being, and only a human being, without any special attachment to any state or national entity whatsoever. When you are courting a nice girl an hour seems like a second. When you sit on a red-hot cinder a second seems like an hour. That's relativity. Science can flourish only in an atmosphere of free speech. Great spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds. A human being is a part of the whole, called by us "universe," a part limited in time and space. I would teach peace rather than war. I would inculcate love rather than hate. A clever person solves a problem. A wise person avoids it. Although I am a typical loner in my daily life, my awareness of belonging to the invisible community of those who strive for truth, beauty, and justice has prevented me from feelings of isolation. Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind. Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better. The greatest scientists are artists as well. If you want to live a happy life, tie it to a goal, not to people or things.
A man's ethical behaviour should be based effectually on sympathy, education, and social ties and needs; no religious basis is necessary. Man would indeed be in a poor way if he had to be restrained by fear of punishment and hope of reward after death.
Albert Einstein Any fool can know. The point is to understand. It occurred to me by intuition, and music was the driving force behind that intuition. My discovery was the result of musical perception. If we knew what it was we were doing, it would not be called research, would it? A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new. I have no special talents. I am only passionately curious. All religions, arts and sciences are branches of the same tree. All these aspirations are directed toward ennobling man's life, lifting it from the sphere of mere physical existence and leading the individual towards freedom.
A human being is a part of the whole called by us universe, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feeling as something separated from the rest, a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.
Albert Einstein A man should look for what is, and not for what he thinks should be. Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile. The most beautiful experience we can have is the mysterious. It is the fundamental emotion that stands at the cradle of true art and true science. The world as we have created it is a process of our thinking. It cannot be changed without changing our thinking. If I were not a physicist, I would probably be a musician. I often think in music. I live my daydreams in music. I see my life in terms of music. I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones. Once you can accept the universe as matter expanding into nothing that is something, wearing stripes with plaid comes easy. I believe in standardizing automobiles. I do not believe in standardizing human beings. You never fail until you stop trying. Gravitation is not responsible for people falling in love. The measure of intelligence is the ability to change.
The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existence. One cannot help but be in awe when he contemplates the mysteries of eternity, of life, of the marvelous structure of reality. It is enough if one tries merely to comprehend a little of this mystery each day.
Albert Einstein It is not that I'm so smart. But I stay with the questions much longer. Coincidence is God's way of remaining anonymous. Creativity is intelligence having fun. Black holes are where God divided by zero. The world is a dangerous place to live, not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don't do anything about it. Everything must be made as simple as possible. But not simpler. If A is a success in life, then A equals x plus y plus z. Work is x; y is play; and z is keeping your mouth shut.
It is, in fact, nothing short of a miracle that the modern methods of instruction have not yet entirely strangled the holy curiosity of inquiry; for this delicate little plant, aside from stimulation, stands mainly in need of freedom. Without this it goes to wrack and ruin without fail.
Albert Einstein The best way to cheer yourself is to cheer somebody else up. A table, a chair, a bowl of fruit and a violin; what else does a man need to be happy? When you trip over love, it is easy to get up. But when you fall in love, it is impossible to stand again. Peace cannot be kept by force; it can only be achieved by understanding. Whoever is careless with the truth in small matters cannot be trusted with important matters. In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity. What is right is not always popular and what is popular is not always right. A question that sometimes drives me hazy: am I or are the others crazy? Imagination is everything. It is the preview of life's coming attractions. We dance for laughter, we dance for tears, we dance for madness, we dance for fears, we dance for hopes, we dance for screams, we are the dancers, we create the dreams. The pursuit of truth and beauty is a sphere of activity in which we are permitted to remain children all our lives. The woman who follows the crowd will usually go no further than the crowd. The woman who walks alone is likely to find herself in places no one has ever been before. Love is a better master than duty. It would be possible to describe everything scientifically, but it would make no sense; it would be without meaning, as if you described a Beethoven symphony as a variation of wave pressure. Blind belief in authority is the greatest enemy of truth. I must be willing to give up what I am in order to become what I will be. I never made one of my discoveries through the process of rational thinking. Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. The world is in greater peril from those who tolerate or encourage evil than from those who actually commit it. Concern for man and his fate must always form the chief interest of all technical endeavors. Never forget this in the midst of your diagrams and equations. All that is valuable in human society depends upon the opportunity for development accorded the individual. Knowledge and skills alone cannot lead humanity to a happy, dignified life. Humanity has every reason to place proclaimers of high moral standards and values above the discoverers of objective truth. Once we accept our limits, we go beyond them. Out of clutter, find simplicity. Nothing happens until something moves. I'd rather be an optimist and a fool than a pessimist and right. Our task must be to free ourselves... by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature and it's beauty. Wisdom is not a product of schooling but of the lifelong attempt to acquire it. Imagination is the highest form of research. God does not play dice with the universe. I live in that solitude which is painful in youth, but delicious in the years of maturity. Only those who attempt the absurd can achieve the impossible. You can never solve a problem on the level on which it was created. I never think of the future - it comes soon enough. Reading, after a certain age, diverts the mind too much from its creative pursuits. Any man who reads too much and uses his own brain too little falls into lazy habits of thinking. Student: Dr. Einstein, Aren't these the same questions as last year's [physics] final exam? Dr. Einstein: Yes; But this year the answers are different. Weakness of attitude becomes weakness of character. It has become appallingly obvious that our technology has exceeded our humanity. The only thing that you absolutely have to know, is the location of the library.
